Master Trainer Standardisation: A Pathway to Lasting Impact

English Total Immersion (ETI) works closely with CHU to support its lecturers in becoming Trinity College London-accredited Master Trainers in the field of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI).

ETI’s Master Trainer programme provides a clear, supported route to international accreditation with Trinity College London. Trainers follow a structured journey from co-designing materials and co-delivering workshops to receiving expert feedback and post-accreditation support.

A Clear Pathway to Becoming a Master Trainer

Collaborative Materials Development

Lecturers are supported in designing and adapting interactive, high-quality training materials for Trinity College London-accredited programmes. This includes developing resources for CERT PT workshops and for use in EMI-focused conferences.

It was eye-opening to learn how to turn dry academic concepts into practical, engaging and interactive training materials. I never realised how engaging EMI training could be.

Collaborative Workshop Delivery

Trainers begin by co-delivering workshops alongside accredited Master Trainers. This guided experience allows them to gradually build confidence while aligning their training skills with international standards.

Working shoulder-to-shoulder with experienced trainers gave me the confidence to lead my own sessions.

Having mentors just a message away made all the difference. Their feedback was both relevant and incisive; a really helpful mix of support.

Developmental Observations

During training, ETI provides non-evaluative observations to help lecturers fine-tune their approach. These observations are supportive and designed to highlight strengths while targeting key areas for growth.

Being observed used to feel scary — but with this team, it felt natural, supportive and a genuine learning opportunity.

Developmental Feedback

Lecturers receive collaborative, team-based feedback that focuses on improving delivery, interaction, and task design. This feedback loop helps build strong, reflective practitioners.

What really stood out was how practical the feedback was. I could apply it the very next time I delivered a training workshop. The feedback was also helpful for my regular student classes

Accreditation and Beyond

Upon successful completion of the programme, ETI helps trainers complete the final step: registration with Trinity College London’s Teacher Development Department, gaining formal recognition as Master Trainers.

Becoming accredited felt like more than a certificate — it marked the start of a new chapter in my teaching and training journey.

Continued Growth

Accreditation is just the beginning. ETI and Trinity continue to offer professional development, co-facilitation opportunities, and involvement in international training projects.

Even after accreditation, the support keeps coming. It’s a real community of practice.

Here’s what CHU’s professors had to say about this highly beneficial Master Trainer programme that began in late 2023 and continued throughout 2024:

“We began by conducting a detailed analysis and evaluation of the Trinity-approved CERT PT training materials used at CHU, NTHU, Yuanpei, and Yuntech. As a team, we agreed on how best to adapt and enhance these resources to better meet our local training goals.

With guidance from Trinity College London-accredited trainers, we co-developed a series of 90-minute workshops. These sessions were designed to supplement the existing CERT PT content and address the specific needs of faculty across the broader Taiwanese EMI university context, while still aligning with international standards.

We then co-delivered these workshops alongside certified Master Trainers to ensure that both content and delivery were consistent with the CERT PT framework and internationally recognised benchmarks.

Following our sessions, we received detailed oral and written feedback from accredited Master Trainers. Their insights allowed us to evaluate the effectiveness of our training and apply key lessons to future EMI workshops.

Finally, we completed self-reflections that highlighted the personal and professional value of participating in this EMI Master Trainer Standardisation Programme.”
