CERT PT Tasks

In addition to full attendance during the workshop part of the course CERT PT course participants are required to submit four written tasks for assessment. These tasks enable lecturers to demonstrate that they can develop and use context-specific teaching resources.

  • Estimated 65 hours of supported and self-study
  • Four assessment tasks – Evaluate, adapt, create and reflect on the use of resources appropriate to a university EMI context informed by professional knowledge and insight

Task 1: Resource Evaluation

Lecturers produce an evaluation of a printed or online teaching/training resource:

  • Evaluating the original resource through the lens of their own professional practice
  • Making explicit links to their EMI teaching / training context
  • Demonstrating insight into wider EMI and TESOL educational practices and the impact understanding of these practices has had on their own professional and classroom practices
  • Including a fully referenced copy of the resource in the appendices using a recognised referencing system
  • Word limit – between 750 and 1000 words

Task 2: Rationale for an Adapted Resource

Lecturers produce a rationale for a resource they have adapted to be suitable for at least 15 minutes of teaching / training for a specified learner group:

  • Explaining the reasons for the adaptations, making direct reference to the specified learner group
  • Demonstrating insight into wider EMI and TESOL educational practices and the impact understanding of these practices has had on their own professional and classroom practices
  • Including a fully referenced copy of the resource in the appendices of both the adapted resource and the original resource using a recognised referencing system

Task 3: Rationale for an Original Resource

Lecturers produce a rationale for an original resource they have created that is suitable for at least 15 minutes of teaching / training for a specified learner group:

  • Making direct reference to pedagogical needs of the specified learner group
  • Demonstrating insight into wider EMI and TESOL educational practices and the impact understanding of these practices has had on their own professional practice
  • Including a copy of the resource in the appendices
  • Referenced using a recognised referencing system
  • Word limit – between 750 and 1000 words

Task 4: Reflections on Resource Use

Lecturers write a reflection on the use of either the adapted resource (from task 2) or the original resource (from task 3):

  • Identifying strengths and weaknesses of the resource, with direct reference to the specified learner group
  • Suggesting solutions for the identified weaknesses and, where appropriate, for improving the strengths
  • Including evidence of learner, peer and/or manager feedback on the use of the resource
  • Referenced using a recognised referencing system
  • Word limit – between 750 and 1000 words

Timetable Submission Dates

Task 1: Two months after completion of input sessions
Task 2: Four months after completion of input sessions
Task 3: Six months after completion of input sessions
Task 4: Eight months after the completion of input sessions

After participating in the workshop sessions that set up the 4 tasks and following the completion of the input sessions the course participants will discuss their tasks as a group in a follow up workshop. (2 hours per task minimum). This could be face to face or in the cloud.

Course participants will also receive formative written feedback on their submissions. The course participants would then have the opportunity to make any final amendments before submitting their tasks for marking at Chung Hua University and subsequently moderation by Trinity.

Teachers discussing new concepts and ideas
Overall support for task completion
  • 8 hours of feedback / support in a group format
  • 4 hours of individual support per lecturer
  • A LINE discussion group will also be set up to encourage discussions, to promote collaboration between the course participants and to ensure the completion of the tasks on time.
  • Ideally each lecturer will complete two tasks per semester. Tutorials will be held at the midpoint of each semester to ensure each lecturer is on task. However, there is flexibility in this system since lecturer duties can vary considerable from semester to semester and this may impact their ability to complete their tasks, and to participate in tutorials.
